Five ingredients. Thirty minutes. And you get these crispy, golden little potato balls that disappear faster than I can plate them. This snack is for all ages, I personally like to serve it as an evening snack.

No deep frying, no oil mess, no standing over a hot pan. The air fryer does all the real work.

About Air Fryer Potato Balls

These are the easiest appetizers made with mashed potatoes. If you have leftover mashed potatoes, you can also make this delicious recipe.

They work as an evening snack with tea, as a party starter, or honestly just when you want something warm and comforting in a hurry. My kids ask for these all the time, and I don’t mind making them because the cleanup is almost nothing.

The cornstarch is the secret. It’s what gives the outside that thin, crispy coating without needing any breading or extra steps. Simple, and it works.

Ingredient Notes

  • Potatoes: Medium-sized ones work best here. Boil them until they’re genuinely soft, not just fork-pierceable.
  • Cornstarch: This is what makes the outside crispy in the air fryer, so don’t skip it or swap it for flour; the result won’t be the same.
  • Salt and black pepper: Basic seasoning here. You can adjust the salt to your taste once the mixture comes together. If you like, add a bit of herbs.
  • Oil spray: Just a light coat before and after arranging in the basket. Enough to help the surface crisp up, not so much that it pools at the bottom.

How to Make Air Fryer Potato Balls

Four steps and you’re done. The only thing that takes any real time is the boiling, and you can get everything else ready while that’s happening.

1. Peel and wash: Peel the potatoes, cut them into medium pieces, and wash them well.

2. Boil until very soft: Bring a pan of water to a full boil. Add the potato pieces and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, until they’re soft enough to mash easily with a fork. Drain all the water completely, then let them sit for 4 to 5 minutes to cool and steam off any extra moisture.

3. Mash and mix: Transfer the cooled potatoes to a mixing bowl and mash them until no big lumps are left. Add the cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together until the mixture is smooth and easy to shape. If it feels sticky or too soft to roll, pop it in the fridge for 15 to 20 minutes. That rest time firms it up nicely.

4. Shape into balls: Roll the mixture into round balls, whatever size you like. I usually go a bit smaller than a golf ball.

5. Preheat the air fryer: Set it to 190°C (375°F) and let it preheat for 2 to 3 minutes. Preheating is worth doing because the hot basket is what starts that crispy surface right away.

6. Air fry: Lightly spray the basket, arrange the balls with a little space between each one, and spray the tops too. Air fry at 190°C (375°F) for 12 to 15 minutes. Flip them carefully at the 6 to 7 minute mark. Once they’re golden and crispy on the outside, they’re ready.

7. Serve hot: Take them out and serve right away with ketchup, mayonnaise, or your favourite dip. They’re best eaten fresh while the outside is still crispy.

Tips for Perfect Potato Balls

  • Drain them properly: After boiling, give the potatoes a real chance to dry out. Any water left in the mash will make the balls sticky and harder to shape, and the outside won’t crisp up as well in the air fryer.
  • Chill the mixture if needed: If the mixture feels soft or the balls are losing their shape when you roll them, don’t try to push through. Put the bowl in the fridge for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Don’t crowd the basket: Leave space between the balls when you arrange them.
  • Flip halfway through: Flipping at the 6 to 7 minute mark is the step that gets you an evenly golden surface on all sides.
  • Every air fryer runs a little different: Check yours a minute or two before the 12-minute mark the first time you make these. If they look golden and feel crispy when you tap the basket, they’re done.

Short Description: Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and ready in 30 minutes. These air fryer potato balls need just 5 ingredients and zero deep frying.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium potatoes (peeled and cut into medium-sized pieces)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil spray

Instructions

  • Peel and wash: Peel the potatoes, cut them into medium pieces, and wash well.
  • Boil the potatoes: Bring a pan of water to a boil. Add the potato pieces and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until fork-soft. Drain all the water and let them cool for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Mash and mix: Add the cooled potatoes to a mixing bowl and mash until smooth. Add cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Mix until the mixture is smooth and shapeable. If too soft, refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Shape the balls: Roll the mixture into round balls of your preferred size.
  • Preheat the air fryer: Preheat to 190°C (375°F) for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Air fry: Lightly spray the basket. Arrange the balls with space between them and spray the tops. Air fry at 190°C (375°F) for 12 to 15 minutes, flipping carefully at the 6 to 7 minute mark, until golden and crispy.
  • Serve: Remove from the air fryer and serve hot with tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, or your favourite dip.

Notes

  • Drain the boiled potatoes fully and let them steam dry before mashing. Wet mash leads to sticky balls that won’t crisp well.
  • If the mixture is soft, refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes before rolling. The balls hold their shape much better when chilled.
  • Don’t crowd the basket. Leave space between balls or the steam will keep the outside soft.
  • Flip at the halfway mark for even golden colour on all sides.
  • Check a minute or two early the first time, since every air fryer runs a little differently.
